THERAPIST DIRECTORIES

On reading the following section you may ask:

“What is the difference between a counsellor and a psychotherapist?”

This is a ‘grey area’ in the UK. Both are trained to explore the experience of the client and to assist them to bring about the desired change. Psychotherapists have an additional understanding of personality development and how circumstances in earlier life can impinge on the present. However, many counsellors also take these considerations into account.

The British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) has an online directory of trained counsellors and psychotherapists. The BACP site also contains the UK Register of Counsellors (UKRC) which lists counsellors accredited by one of four reputable organisations.

Similarly, the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) has an online directory of UKCP registered psychotherapists.

Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute (SPTI) maintains a directory for its graduates, all trained to the high standards required by UKCP. This can be accessed from the SPTI site by following the ‘Find a Therapist’ link in the left navigation bar. Whilst SPTI is based in Nottingham, its graduates are to be found throughout the UK.

Many private counsellors or psychotherapists advertise through the Counselling Directory who require evidence of professional qualifications or memberships before entering individuals in their directory.

If you are lesbian, gay, bisexual, gender-queer or transgendered, you may appreciate the nationwide directory of ‘affirmative’ therapists to be found in the left navigation bar at Pink Therapy.
